MANDY KENNEDY'S COMMUNITY SERVICE BLOG
Tulane Pharmacology Graduate Program has been paramount in helping me grow as an individual wanting to excel in my career in the focus of patient care.
I have learned a myraid of information that helps me better understand the mechanisms of drugs, why certain medications are used over others, different diseases that affect parts of the world (ie malaria) that I never even think about, since it is not prevalent in the US. I appreciate the time and dedication the teachers put into the learning objectives, always being accommodating, and helping me achieve my ultimate goal of getting my PH.D at Tulane. Pharmwiki and Osmosis, has been instrumental, in helping me learn the material, if I had those resources previously, I feel like I would of exceled even more.
As a woman of 34 with ADHD, it is hard to manage time, getting overloaded by stress, (I dont know how to reduce my stress levels, but Im working on it), but by becoming more organized and having a visual learning resource has made the Tulane Graduate experience a game-changer. I know the amount of effort and time it took to creating Pharmwiki, and I especially love the quizzes, to really test my knowledge.
Furthermore, the areas I need to review and really concentrate in the material presented is in Principles. Moreover, I've never really experienced this type of material in such great depth, and trying to conceptualize has been a hard task. But I will continue to work/study/ and review this in-depth content. So, I will need to start focusing on Principles more, and working on my time management skills especially during the 1-4pm test window, because when I am rushed for time, I do not perform as well.
Overall, I am happy with my level of performance, study habits is key when you are organized and I think as the semester progresses, the more organized I have become. What really helps my level of performance is making drug charts with colors because it helps me organize it into a way my brain can digest. To improve my study habits, I need to start setting time limits on how long to study Med Pharm, principles, and MCP.
It would be my dream to continue my education as a PHD student here, and I would love to even do lab research with a professor to further enhance my skills/knowledge of clinical research. For my community service, I signed up to work at 826 volunteering and the Gentilly Fest, and I am looking forward to it. A quote that truly resonated with me is "To give life a meaning, one must have a purpose larger than self.” Community service not only gives back to the community but helps you become a well-balanced person.
